Last week I had the pleasure of working on my youngest client. 9 week old baby girl who was suffering from colic and constipation. She was distressed when she came in and after one move over her diaphragm she immediately relaxed and smiled at her mother. It has to be the most rewarding treatment I have ever given. Four moves over her back and three on her tummy and she was smiling and moving with ease. Her mother contacted me later to tell me she had released her bowel an hour later. This is why I love my job.
New born babies can often suffer from constipation, reflux, difficulty in digestion or restless sleep. The cause being an immature digestive system. Remember with a child's growth their colic will disappear as their digestive system functions better. Babies can suffer from colic up to 6 months but baby Bowen has been described as shortening the amount of time it takes to settle. Bowen within babies can effectively relieve discomfort and calm the nervous system which can be off balance due to the stress of birth. It relaxes the muscles allowing the infants body to realign naturally.
As The Bowen technique uses gentle rolling type moves over specific areas of the body, it makes for a powerful tool in relieving discomfort in babies. With four movements on the back and three on the stomach area, this is enough to sooth the baby and relieve their pain. The baby can be held by the parent, sitting in a pram or lying on the therapy couch whilst the procedure lasts. The stimulation is not painful or invasive. The comfort of the baby and the parent is very important and the treatment only last 15 mins
Babies, like us adults are all different and the number of treatments depends on varying factors. Their physical health depends on their birth, being natural, c section, whether traumatic or with ease. Usually after one to three treatments, symptoms can completely disappear or significantly decreases. Giving a more relaxed baby who has a deeper sleep and better bowel movements. It also depends directly on the physical and emotional well being of the mother. Their psychological welfare is hugely important and allows for a more specific treatment. When treating a baby it is also recommended to treat the mother.
The Bowen technique is effective in treating many other causes of discomfort in babies and children. Some examples that respond to the Bowen technique are:
colic
poor or disrupted sleep
reflux, vomiting
bloated stomach and gas, constipation
bed wetting in children
colds, congestion, sinusitis and similar infections
Asthma, respiratory problems and allergies
Postural imbalance, pelvic malalignment and uneven leg length.
